What Does “Neurodiversity-Affirming” Really Mean?

You may have heard the term “neurodiversity-affirming,” but what does it actually mean?

At its heart, neurodiversity-affirming simply means recognizing that there isn’t one “correct” way for a brain to work. Differences in how children think, feel, focus, and communicate aren’t flaws — they’re variations.

A neurodiversity-affirming approach focuses on:

  • Respect
  • Understanding
  • Support
  • Strength-based thinking

Rather than trying to change who a child is, it encourages environments that adapt to the child.
